Operating the Kattendijk lock

By passing through the Kattendijk lock, the Antwerp City Port area is accessible to pleasure and passenger vessels coming from or heading towards the Scheldt area.

Operating the Kattendijk lock

The operation and management of the Kattendijk lock are carried out by De Vlaamse Waterweg nv.

Vessels, coming from, or bound for the Scheldt area, can use the Kattendijk lock:

Type of vesselMaximum dimensionsMandatory use during operating hours
Pleasure craft
LOA 90 m * GBR 12 * 3 m
Yes
Passenger ships
LOA 90 m * GBR 12 * 3 m
No

Commercial shipping cannot use the Kattendijk lock and must enter or leave the City Port area via the access routes of the seaport area or the Albert Canal.

Operating hours of the lock:

  • Mondays to Saturdays: from 6am to 10pm
  • Sundays and holidays (from Easter to 30 September inclusive): from 9am to 7pm

However, operation of the lock will depend on the tide. The lock is operated only when the water level in the river Scheldt is high enough. In addition, for safety reasons, the lock must be closed whenever the tide is higher than 5.0 m TAW*. The lock is therefore only used at water levels between + 2.2 m TAW and 4.6 m TAW Scheldt level.

*TAW = 'Tweede Algemene Waterpassing'. This is the reference height that is used when expressing levels (and ground levels) in Belgium. The zero point (0 m TAW) is the average height of the sea at low tide in Ostend.
